The Wise Mother
Why Pushing Through Isn’t Working—
And What To Do Instead?
You’re tired, but you keep going.
You’re overwhelmed, but you smile through it.
You tell yourself, “I just have to push through.”
And more importantly, what we really need.
“Pushing through” can look like a lot of things:
Getting through the day on caffeine and willpower
Ignoring pain, fatigue, or emotional stress
Putting everyone else’s needs ahead of your own
Feeling guilty for resting—even when your body is screaming for it
We often confuse this behavior with strength. But it’s not resilience—it’s survival mode. And while it may work for a short time, it’s not sustainable. Over time, pushing through leads to deeper depletion.
Here’s what I've seen over and over again:
🧠 Nervous System Overload
Pushing through keeps your body in “fight or flight” mode—high cortisol, poor sleep, constant tension. Over time, this wears down your adrenal and hormonal health.
⚖️ Hormonal Imbalance
Skipping rest and ignoring symptoms can lead to thyroid dysfunction, irregular cycles, mood swings, and postpartum hormone crashes.
🥣 Nutrient Depletion
Your body uses more nutrients under stress—and when you’re not resting or nourishing properly, your reserves plummet. (Especially B vitamins, magnesium, and zinc—critical for mood, metabolism, and recovery.)
💤 Burnout & Emotional Exhaustion
When rest isn’t built in, you become disconnected from yourself. Many women describe feeling “flat,” anxious, living in a shell, or irritable—yet still keep going.
If you’re tired of being tired—physically, emotionally, or spiritually—it’s time for a new approach.
Here’s what I teach in my practice:
Your body is wise. Track your energy, sleep, mood, and cycle—not to judge yourself, but to observe patterns. Often, small signs show up long before a bigger health crisis.
Deep rest supports everything from hormone regulation to blood sugar, brain health, and mood. It’s not optional—it’s medicine. While interrupted sleep by babies and children is a real reason to be tired, there can be many other reasons for non-restorative sleep that get overlooked. Let’s normalize real rest for mothers and provide real solutions.
This is especially important in the early motherhood season. Warming, mineral-rich foods like bone broth, slow-cooked meats, soups, and stews are incredibly healing. Think: ancestral nutrition meets modern science.
Whether you’ve been on hormonal birth control, pregnant, breastfeeding, or simply running on empty—your body likely needs repair.
Start with:
A variety of whole, nutrient-dense foods (including things your grandmother ate like organ meats, marrow, a variety of animal and plant proteins, vegetables, nuts, and fruits).
Targeted supplementation is based on individual needs.
Importantly, many women—especially those with limited access to nutrient-dense foods—may already be marginally deficient in folate and other nutrients essential for a healthy pregnancy. These patients benefit the most from accessible, food-first strategies and simple supplementation.
